Technology in Europe

Paper is probably the most unexpected vehicle for innovation in Europe.

In medieval times, the city of Xativa (Valencia) in Spain was the first European city to adopt and improve the paper manufacturing techniques from China and the Middle East.

Today, Europe is still exploring paper fibres, resulting in new technology breakthroughs. The various paper technologies reflect the priority research areas of the European Commission, including the biobased economy and replacement of fossil fuels.

The European paper recycle rate is 72%, compared to 50% world average (CEPI 2013).
